Independent Living

United Cerebral Palsy of the Wabash Valley assists people with varying needs and disabilities through their Independent Living Program.  UCPWV provides residential units; most under Section 8 Housing Assistance.  This program is possible because of the partnership with the Terre Haute Housing Authority.  The historic Bell Building was purchased and renovated as barrier-free living environments by United Cerebral Palsy of the Wabash Valley in the 1990's.  The building has twelve, one and two bedroom apartments.  The individuals living there would not be able to live independently without a barrier-free environment and housing assistance.  Additionally, UCPWV has build 19 barrier free homes in partnership with the Terre Haute Redevelopment Commission.  These two and three bedroom homes assure low rent housing to those with disabilities.  This program has served many families and individuals over the years, enabling those with physical challenges to live with dignity and independence.

Assistive Technology Lending Library

UCPWV recognizes the expenses parents face in meeting the technology needs of their children challenged by disabilities. Additionally UCPWV  realizes that schools, as well as physical and occupational therapists can be challenged with limited resources to meet the needs of the children they serve. The Assistive Technology Lending Library has multiple resources for parents, teachers and therapists to borrow in meeting the children's needs.

Medical Loan and Purchase Program

The UCPWV’s medical loan and purchase program helps both adults and children in obtaining wheelchairs, walkers, specially equipped computers and augmentative communication devices to assist in daily living. This program offers these items to those who do not have the insurance or resources to meet their needs. This program also assists individuals in paying for ramps for their home and lifts for cars. This program has literally helped hundreds of children and adults retain their independence.
